Hadn’t heard a thing about it! But then, I just woke up. May it have been natural in cause, minimal in loss of life, and not a foreshock.

Still in bed for another hour or two before tuning in on the damage ... but interesting choice of words there ... "may it have been natural in cause". My dig into the Lahaina fire has turned up more than the weaponization of weather, rumors of weaponizing plate tectonics. Hoping for the best when I finally crawl from beneath the futon and tune in. But for now, Bonzo is back to bed for at least one more unsettling dream. Happy ... uh ... 'meaningful' New Year to ya buddy.

Thanks for reporting. May you be well! Happy new year-- despite this rocky start!

Same to you Transcriber ... ever the steady hand and eye.

Just after 11 pm here and about 10 minutes ago, a pretty big after-shock just hit in the same area. Lots of houses damaged, but even among those who are safe, many are in evacuation centers that have no food, electricity, or phone access.

Ouch, just found that some of the towns that have been evacuated will reach a -2°C tonight. The T.V. news is warning those who are hunkering down in their cars to occasionally stretch to avoid economy-class syndrome.

May we both make the best of this year.

Thanks for the additional information. This helps since I no longer have a TV...

Kudos, Guy, for getting rid of the propaganda / bread & circuses box. Staying at a friend's house for the holiday, otherwise I'd be back to my Kindle / YouTube addiction ... though not quite yet ready to cut my cord to the T.V.

Happy New Year to you.

Likewise. Keep on rockin'. Especially if another tremor comes. Just go with the flow.

Better that than flow with the go. 😅

Just 10 minutes ago, a major tremor of 3 in the area.

If not pleasant dreams, at least a deep sleep to ya.

Even in Osaka, skyscrapers were swaying like reeds in a breeze :(

I had barely felt it in Tokyo, but thought it was a more common local tremor. My phone didn't go off, but the T.V. sure did. One of my fishing buddies in Kobe exchanged messages because his phone alarm kept repeatedly going off.

Despite it all, Happy New Year Tirion.

Nothing on my phone either. As luck would have it, I was driving across Biwako at the time. The car started rocking like a boat. I thought a tire had blown!

Happy New Year to you too, Steve - and what an auspicious start!

Damn.

A 7 aftershock around the same area just hit as I was writing this!

Your experience reminds me of the exact stop signal I was waiting at when the Great Kanto earthquake hit. Thought my engine had thrown a rod or something. Didn't realize anything until all the other cars starting pulling over to the side of the road.

More determined than ever to make the most of this year. Hang in there buddy.

About 5 minutes after NHK reported a 7, they apologized and downgraded it to a 3. Doesn't inspire much trust in the technical prowess over here.

No, it doesn't. I think they're clueless. I'd rather follow Dutchsinse on YouTube. As so often, apparently he predicted the the timing and the location, although he was expecting a slightly higher magnitude.

Now about 24 hours later and it looks like things were not nearly as bad as they could have been. For a 7.6 mag quake with numerous aftershocks it looks like the death toll will be well under 100 (it's 30 as I write this according to NHK) and not an enormous amount of damage with a lot less tsunami than was feared and only a handful of large fires (maybe just 2? not sure).

I suspect the fact that it happened late afternoon on a holiday helped a lot

Yeah. Last night on Twitter (X) Japan, some people were glad it happened during New Years because some of the youth had returned from work or school in Tokyo, so they could carry the elderly to safety on their backs.

Lots of chat on X about nuclear safety north of Osaka, particularly at a site where the locals did not want a power plant to begin with.

In general I want Japan to have nukes. They make way more sense than bird slicers or solar and are a lot less vulnerable to supply issues than oil or LPG. BUT really it would be kind of nice if the placed them in places that are as seismically stable as possible.

Bizarrely the story I swear I saw on the NHK news site about radioactive water leaking from one of the plants nearby seems to have disappeared.

Yeah. I agree that the days of easy oil are over, and renewables are iffy at best. But another thing about Nukes is the regulatory agency. Like the FDA and CDC for Big Pharma, what can be corrupted will be. It seems like sociopaths are attracted to positions of authority, and are largely successful at getting what they want and keeping it. Maybe a short summary of a future history of homo sapiens.

Had to turn off TV coverage to get the kids to eat and off to bed. The large tsunami warnings are no longer posted. Either they hit while the TV was off or they are no longer believed to a threat. Seeing lots of coverage of collapsed homes and impassable roads but none of tsunami damage. Now seeing an onsite report from Toyama City. Lights are still on but the roads are unleavened, broken pavement. The previous on site report from somewhere else was off an abandoned town completely devoid of electrical power.

Hey K. Yeah, I had to cut the TV and rely on a friend for occasional Twitter (X) reports. Could have been worse. Lahaina bad.

A Happy New Year to you.
