Quite a remarkable essay. Somewhat sad and tragic but you reflect well to find rationale. I see you as a gaijin who has no giri by definition and of course, by not bowing to your masters and tending to your students (duty) you lacked giri. Aside from that huge cultural gap, you indicate why Japanese Universities are somewhat like machines. But the best go onto the best corporations not to become ordinary salary-men.

I attended many classes at Sophia (1962-66) mainly in the sciences which were taught mostly by Japanese professors. Had other courses in philosophy but mainly by Jesuit Professors of various nationalities. But that University is likely nothing like the places you supported.

Wow!

That was great. I need to revisit this.

Today I learned: "labyrinthine."

Thanks!

Lots of material, Steve! Thanks for posting and giving me background on you. And I'll follow up on the Chomsky link which might explain why I think he confuses socialism and anarchy--two opposite systems, in my view.

Some of your content reminded me of Cynthia Chung's Snow is Black: https://cynthiachung.substack.com/p/sleepwalking-into-fascism-why-cianatos

You clearly have lots of content to post!
